Wear a Scrub. Get a Career Program
The Mercyhurst College Hirtzel Institute for Health Education and Aging and the PartnerSHIP for a Healthy Community will expose minority youth to health care careers through a creative new program called “Wear a Scrub. Get a Career Program.”
The faith-based initiative will give 270 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students in the Erie community a chance to explore a number of health care careers through events at 12 local churches.
The goal of the program is to address the lack of minorities in the health professions, as well as the shortage of qualified health care workers in Erie County. The belief is that by exposing young people to these careers prior to high school, the trends could be reversed, explained Dr. Linda Rhodes, director of the Hirtzel Institute.
